Bad reasons for keeping pets

A lot of people justify the fact that they keep a pet with arguments that aren't correct. These arguments are being made up to get a clear conscience or show that they have a disability in engaging social contacts.
If you think that one or more of the reasons listed below are valid, then we are concerned if these reasons are your reason to keep a pet.

  • animals are more loyal than people
  • an animal can be locked away and removed from his cage when you need it
  • if you're fed up with the animal, you can simply bring it to a sanctuary or give it a lethal injection
  • an animal is enthusiastic when it sees you
  • with animals you can be yourself
  • exotic animals boost my status
  • children have to learn how to cope with animals
  • when a gold fish dies, you can just buy a new one
  • animals born in captivity are accustomed to their situation and are able to withstand (lonesome) confinement
  • animals don't argue and reproach
  • animals are thankful when you take good care of them
  • animals feel how I am

We think one should not try to motivate other people to keep pets or complain when the publics interest diminishes for a certain hobby (like for example keeping aquaria).
Any reason not to keep a pet is good, even ones like:

  • it's too much work
  • it's too expensive
  • I don't have the space
  • I don't have the time
  • I don't want to commit myself
  • who will take care of it during vacations?
  • etc..

If you agree with that animals have a right to freedom, then you shouldn't keep pets.

If you insist on keeping pets, please pick it up in an animal shelter.

Petting animals does not result in lower blood pressure

A Dutch Health Insurance Company (De Friesland) wondered if petting animals can help to lower your blood pressure. The company did a number of “humorous” tests and arrived at the conclusion that petting animals does not, in fact, help against high blood pressure. The Insurance Company still advises keeping a pet, but then, of course, one that suits you best. To help you in your choice as to whether you should keep a pet or not, click here. You would be wise to do so!
